Broadening access to the Faculty Board of Review

This proposal expands access to the Faculty Board of Review to all instructors for cases involving academic freedom, except student academic appointees who have a separate review board and process. The proposal passed the Bloomington Faculty Council, with three members opposed.

Implications

The Faculty Board of Review hears appeals from faculty of various kinds of Administration actions (e.g., unfair pay cuts). This proposal expands Faculty Board of Review access for issues of academic freedom only beyond “faculty” to people such as visiting professors. This will require the Faculty Board of Review to parse out issues of academic freedom from other issues typically involved in such grievances. However, it will align the Bloomington procedures with University Academic Freedom policy (ACA-32) which stipulates that cases involving alleged impairment of academic freedom shall be referred to the appropriate Board of Review and dealt with according to established procedure.
